This 9 rot. roll is a summary of various inquisitions that took place in April 1440, some of which still survive. It shows collections made for both Easter and Michaelmas, and notes whether an individual paid or had moved. The inquisitions are as follows: E 179/173/100 - Southampton (which contains additional detail on the Italians who were hosted in the town, which has been added to their notes); E 179/173/99 - unidentified hundreds (see below); E 179/173/102 m. 2 - Christchurch and Ringwood hundreds; E 179/173/98 m. 3 - Overton, Basingstoke, New Forest and Bermondspit hundreds; E 179/173/98 m. 7 - Finchdean, Micheldever, Odiham, Redbridge, Holdshot and Chuteley hundreds; E 179/173/98 m. 6 - Alton, Barton Stacey and Wherwell hundreds; E 179/173/98 m. 5 - King's Somborne; E 179/173/98 m. 4 - Winchester Soke, Andover hundred and village, New Alresford (Fawley hundred) and Meonstoke hundred; E 179/173/98 m. 9 - Winchester; E 179/173/98 m. 1 - Kingsclere and Pastrow hundreds; E 179/173/98 m. 8 - Mainsbridge, Fordingbridge and Bishop's Waltham hundreds; E 179/173/98 m. 10 - various villages in Portsdown, Bosmere, Thorngate and Titchfield hundreds; E 179/98 m. 2 - Buddlesgate, Evingar and Bountisborough, hundreds, and the towns of Portsmouth and Kingston.
Nine hundreds have not been clearly identified, but some must have been covered in rots. 2d-3d and in the villages in rots. 8-9d, and are also scattered in assessments made in other hundreds. They are Crondall, Fareham, Fawley, Hambledon, East and West Medina, East Meon, Portsdown and Bishop's Sutton.
