England’s Immigrants 1330 – 1550 Resident Aliens in the Late Middle Ages

E 179/235/4, m. 3 [1508]

Archive: The National Archives
Reference: E 179/235/4
Sub-reference: m. 3
Document Type: tax assessment
Document Date: 12 July 1440
Content Date: 7 - 9 April 1440
Notes: Contrary to usual practice in this database, these details have been taken from the transcribed copy of the assessment sent to the sheriff on 12 July 1440 for the collection process, rather than the surviving inquisitions held on 7 and 9 April 1440 (E 179/81/87), as the latter documents are damaged and incomplete. However, the details have been cross-checked with the surviving sections of that document, and any additional information added. Notes in the margin recorded those people who did not pay. In common with elsewhere in this database, where people are named simply as 'Janyn Frensshman', 'Frensshman' has been entered as their surname. However, the format of this particular document strongly suggests that this may only be a nationality.
