England’s Immigrants 1330 – 1550 Resident Aliens in the Late Middle Ages

E 179/235/4, m. 4 [1518]

Archive: The National Archives
Reference: E 179/235/4
Sub-reference: m. 4
Document Type: tax assessment
Document Date: 12 July 1440
Content Date: 6 April 1440
Notes: Contrary to usual practice in this database, these details have been taken from the composite assessment roll for both Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, sent to the sheriff on 12 July 1440 for the collection process, rather than the original inquisition for the town of Cambridge held on 6 April 1440 (E 179/81/85). Many of the inquisitions from which the sheriff's roll was compiled are damaged and incomplete, and thus the collection roll has been used throughout. However, the details have been cross-checked with the inquisitions, and any additional information included. Notes in the margin record those people who did not pay. In common with the rest of this database, for people described simply as 'John Frenchman' or 'John Tailor', 'Frenchman' and 'Tailor' have been entered as that person's surname. However, the format of this document, and the transposing of the words in some names, clearly indicates that in this roll, these do refer to nationalities or occupations, and are not true 'surnames'.
