Notes: | Collectors roll for Kent. This roll was originally compiled using information extracted from the inquisitions now at E 179/124/134. However, those are now fragmentary and incomplete. Some people are clearly taxed in different places and hundreds from 1440, but this is probably more a result of the confusing administrative geography of Kent than any clear movement of people. Many taxpayers, particularly the non-householders, appear to have occupational 'surnames', which in this case presumably are a likely reflection of their actual trades. Many of the people taxed here under Washlingstone hundred were taxed in the lowy of Tonbridge in 1440. Whether this change was deliberate, or whether a heading was omitted from this document by mistake, is unclear. |
