Document Type: | tax assessment |
Document Date: | c. 7 January 1484 |
Notes: | This Middlesex document features Westminster and the parishes surrounding the City of London, rather than the entirety of the county. It has been published in J. L. Bolton, The Alien Communities of London in the Fifteenth Century (Stamford, 1998), pp. 106-118. Where Bolton has inserted a footnote for an individual entry, a note has been made for further reference. There are some errors in the publication that have been corrected here. A note has been made if there is any query. A second copy of the document can be found in E 179/141/95, which does also contain a further few names. It must be noted that while occupation is given for many as servant, this was probably short-hand in this case for non-householder. There is a curious section of repetition in the document, as also noted by Bolton, whereby names assessed in St Clement Danes are also given for Whitechapel (see Bolton, p. 115 n. 274). This repetition is also repeated in the copy document, E 179/141/95. While it could be a major clerical error, Bolton has suggested that this may have been an attempt to balance the books. A note has been made where the repetition has taken place for the Whitechapel residents. |
