England’s Immigrants 1330 – 1550 Resident Aliens in the Late Middle Ages

E 179/113/111 [2447]

Archive: The National Archives
Reference: E 179/113/111
Document Type: tax assessment
Document Date: 9 June 1444
Notes: Inquest for Gloucestershire. Despite the small number of assessed taxpayers, the order to the sheriff to collect the sums due (1 Dec. 1446) clearly shows that these were all the people assessed to pay these collections. TNA E 159/223, Brevia retornabilia, Michaelmas term, rot 6d. The names of the taxpayers are repeated there. See also TNA E 159/224, Recorda, Michaelmas term, rot 24, which notes that Simon Norman eventually paid, and many years later goods were distrained from John Frenssheman.
