England’s Immigrants 1330 – 1550 Resident Aliens in the Late Middle Ages

E 179/235/14, m. 3 [2509]

Archive: The National Archives
Reference: E 179/235/14
Sub-reference: m. 3
Document Type: tax assessment
Document Date: 9 January 1443
Notes: List of taxpayers for Somerset. The 'occupation' husbandman and status 'singleman' seem to have been used in this document effectively to denote householders and non-housholders. Lots of people described as husbandmen also have occupational surnames, suggesting that those may have been their actual trades, and one man was described both as husbandman and the rector of Foxcote, which is an unlikely combination.
