E 179/235/23, m. 2 [606]

Archive: The National Archives
Reference: E 179/235/23
Sub-reference: m. 2
Document Type: tax assessment
Document Date: 5 September 1449
Notes: Broad Street and Bishopsgate wards assessed together. The assessment includes Italian merchant strangers (from Genoa, Luca, Venice and Lombardy) paying 6s 8d each, and merchants' clerks paying 20d each. As well as being noted as householders, a note has also been made on whether they paid extra as merchants or clerks. Bradley has noted these Italians in her PhD thesis, appendix 4. According to the document there are 60 non-householders, but there appear to be 61 names.
